Biodiversity, Climate Change and Industry: Understanding and Assessing the Intersections

September 18, 2024/by Patricia Leidemer

View the webinar

The world is facing a dual crisis of biodiversity loss and climate change — two largescale risks with interconnected drivers and impacts. To better understand the intersections between biodiversity and climate change, and to implement solutions that will address both issues, the U.S. Geological Survey is developing a Biodiversity and Climate Change Assessment (BCCA).

During this invite-only webinar, members of the BCCA Guidance Committee and authors will discuss the role of industry in this assessment, including how the BCCA can support economic decision-making to address biodiversity loss. In addition to learning about the status of the BCCA, attendees can also offer feedback on the considerations of their specific industries to address the biodiversity and climate change issues identified in the BCCA.

What you’ll learn:

  • Background information on the creation and status of the BCCA
  • The connections between biodiversity and climate change and the solutions that work to address both concerns
  • The role that industry can play in supporting and utilizing the BCCA

Who should take this webinar:

  • Industry professionals working on biodiversity and/or climate change mitigation efforts

Presenters:

  • Leah Gerber, Founding Director & Professor, Center for Biodiversity Outcomes, Arizona State University
  • Alex Ireland, President & CEO, New Jersey Audubon
  • Margaret O’Gorman, President, WHC
  • Robert Campbell, Director of Consulting, WHC (Moderator)

Putting the Pieces Together: Complementary Conservation Projects

August 28, 2024/by Patricia Leidemer

View the webinar

You’ve developed a conservation project on your corporate land focusing on a discrete habitat type, wildlife species or educational effort. Now that this project is fully functional, it’s time to start thinking about ways to enhance it with features already on your site – for example, are there reptiles living in your wetland that need basking logs? Are nearby schools in need of a field trip location?

In this webinar, WHC staff will share how you can complement existing conservation projects with easy add-ons, from building nests to teaching students about wildlife monitoring. Staff will discuss how these efforts can integrate seamlessly into projects already existing on-site, as well as how to receive credit through WHC Certification for these complementary projects.

What you’ll learn:

  • How to expand on existing conservation project with easy add-ons
  • Ways to enhance conservation efforts within habitat, species and education projects
  • How WHC Certification recognizes voluntary corporate conservation efforts

Who should take this webinar:

  • Conservation teams interested in having a greater impact on the species, habitats and communities in their area
  • Project teams that have already achieved WHC Certification looking to initiate new projects that complement their current efforts

Presenters:

  • Doreen Tadde, Senior Consultant, WHC
  • Delainey Williams, Manager, Conservation Certification, WHC

Protecting Earth’s Most Valuable Resources

July 12, 2024/by Patricia Leidemer

Conservation Activities to Benefit Water and Air Quality
Sponsored by General Motors

Water and air are the earth’s most valuable resources. No ecosystem or human community could exist without access to clean air and water, making the protection of these resources a paramount concern. Unfortunately, decades of industry and development have had negative effects on the quality of the earth’s air and water.

The case studies featured in this white paper illustrate the role of habitat-specific projects in water and air quality improvement.

Microforestry, or the practice of densely planting local species to accelerate forest development, is growing in popularity. The benefits of microforests range from wildlife habitat to reduced temperatures to improved mental health, and they require little to no maintenance once established. Microforests’ suitability for various sizes and types of lands — including small sites and urban locations — make this nature-based solution an ideal option for corporate landowners.

In this webinar, hear how WHC member WM became a pioneer in corporate microforest planting. WM team members will share the challenges, successes and lessons learned from their microforestry work, from the importance of working with a knowledgeable partner to the initial maintenance required.

What you’ll learn:

  • The benefits of microforests
  • Tips for planning, implementing and maintaining a corporate microforest
  • How to gain third-party recognition for a microforest via WHC Certification

Who should take this webinar:

  • Corporate conservation programs interested in developing a new microforest
  • Existing microforestry sites looking for further support and information

Enhancing Habitats for Reptiles and Amphibians

April 10, 2024/by Patricia Leidemer

Corporate Conservation Efforts to Protect Herptiles
Sponsored by Ontario Power Generation

Reptiles and amphibians have a rich global diversity. From painted turtles to green tree frogs, alligators to fire salamanders, these groups of species — collectively referred to as herptiles — exhibit many colors, shapes and sizes and exist on all continents except Antarctica. Unfortunately, herptiles are also among the world’s most endangered species.

This white paper highlights examples of reptile and amphibian conservation projects at corporate sites around the world.

Planting for Pollinators: How to Find the Right Native Plants in Your Area

April 3, 2024/by Patricia Leidemer

View the webinar

There’s no going wrong with native plants — from increasing biodiversity to requiring less maintenance, these plants benefit the health of the environment as well as the wildlife that depends on them. Native plants are also a particularly valuable source of food for pollinators, and pollinator gardens can have a positive impact on the local community as well as local wildlife.

With Native Plant Month and Earth Day approaching, it’s the perfect time to start adding native, pollinator-friendly plants to your corporate gardens. However, it can be challenging to know which plants are native for your specific location. Since 1973, the National Wildlife Federation’s Garden for Wildlife program has worked to simplify the plant selection process by connecting people to their local native plants. In this free webinar, Garden for Wildlife CEO Shubber Ali will share how corporate native plantings have a positive impact not only on the ecosystem, but also on the community, employees and the company’s bottom line.

What you’ll learn:

  • Why it’s important to garden for wildlife, specifically pollinators
  • How to determine the right native plants for your area and where to source them
  • Tips for incorporating native plants into a corporate setting

Who should take this webinar:

  • Corporate conservation programs interested in  using native plants
  • Companies that want to use native landscaping to support the biodiversity of their community
  • Anyone interested in supporting pollinators in their area
