Building Insect Hotels: Enhancing Hospitality for Bugs, Bees and Beetles

March 28, 2023/by Ivan Gospodinov

View the webinar

…

Insects play a key role in healthy ecosystems — they pollinate plants, improve soil health and serve as an crucial part of the food chain. Despite their importance, insect populations have seen a decline in recent years due to habitat loss, use of pesticides and a changing climate. Insect hotels are an easy and inexpensive way to support insects in a habitat near you. Not only do these structures provide shelter for pollinators and other insects, but building them also serves as a fun activity that raises awareness about the importance of insects and can even support STEM learning objectives.

In this webinar, you’ll learn the basics of constructing your own insect hotel and tips on using an insect hotel to facilitate learning at your habitat. At the end of the webinar, we’ll invite you to build your own bug hotel and submit it to our “Best of” insect hotel challenge!

What you’ll learn:

  • Ideal materials for building an insect hotel and the best locations to place them
  • How to maintain and clean an insect hotel
  • Ways to incorporate an insect hotel into an existing habitat project

Who should take this webinar:

  • Conservation teams interested in including insect monitoring as a STEM activity
  • Members of a pollinator project looking for ways to enhance their habitat
  • Anyone who wants to learn how to provide shelter for insects

Presenter:

  • Delainey Williams, Certification Manager, WHC

What’s Happening Under the Water? How to Start an Aquatic Conservation Project

March 16, 2023/by Ivan Gospodinov

View the webinar

There’s a myriad of ways to support species and habitat needs on corporate lands. Conservation teams may feel confident in their abilities to plant native plants, build a pollinator garden or install nest boxes — but when it comes to projects that involve aquatic species or habitats, what’s happening under the water can seem much murkier.

With World Water Day coming up on March 22, now is a great time to start thinking about how to build a conservation project that supports aquatic species and habitats. In this webinar, we’ll share an overview of the different kinds of aquatic conservation projects – from protecting fish to restoring riparian habitats and more. You’ll gain insight into what it takes to start and maintain an aquatic project, supported by specific examples from several long-running and successful projects at Ontario Power Generation’s Wesleyville site.

What you’ll learn:

  • The different types of aquatic conservation projects, including species protection, habitat restoration and invasive species management
  • How to get started on an aquatic conservation project
  • Tips for handling challenges that may come along with these types of projects

Who should take this webinar:

  • Corporate conservation teams that are interested in starting an aquatic conservation project
  • Current members of an aquatic conservation team looking for tips on maintaining their work
  • Anyone who wants to learn more about protecting aquatic species and habitats

Presenters:

  • Ashley Fox, Associate Environmental Advisor – Corp. Environment, Health & Safety, Ontario Power Generation
  • Gwen Harris, Conservation Specialist, WHC

Projects are the building blocks of a conservation program, so choosing the right project type is key. The challenge is determining how the actions you are taking (or plan to take) will map into the WHC Certification framework.

In this webinar, Tandem Global staff will discuss how to identify and select the appropriate projects to build a program. You’ll learn the different components to consider in order to adequately map your program, including habitats to include, the focus of activities occurring on-site, selecting an appropriate project type and determining when a project is actively or non-actively managed. In addition, Tandem Global will share several case studies of how different programs map activities into different project types. This webinar is suitable for both beginners and experienced applicants who want to streamline their projects and ensure they are getting credit for their hard work.

What you’ll learn:

  • What program mapping is and why it is important
  • Guidance on the mapping process, supported with examples inspired by past applications
  • How to maximize your credit for managing and monitoring multiple habitats and/or species

   Who should take this webinar:

  • Companies on their first WHC Certification application cycle
  • Conservation teams that have had challenges in identifying the appropriate project
  • Anyone interested in learning more about specific components of the overall Certification process

Protecting Our Most Vital Resource: Working Together for Watershed Conservation

December 8, 2022/by Ivan Gospodinov

This on-demand webinar is comprised of three separate videos, each focused on a different region within the U.S. – the East Coast, Midwest and Southwest. Please find links below for each regional video.

…

Clean water is a necessity for life and the foundation of healthy ecosystems, successful agriculture and strong communities. Since every industry has water as part of their process, private landowners can play a key role in largescale watershed conservation. But it is not up to corporations alone to have a positive effect on water quality. By building partnerships within and beyond the private sector, companies can expand their impact and engage stakeholders who may not have otherwise been involved in water conservation.

In this webinar, you’ll hear from three organizations — a corporation, a state agency, and a collaborative initiative — about their watershed enhancement work. From connecting with farmers to removing invasive plants, these entities are working across sectors and establishing strong relationships for water stewardship.

What you’ll learn:

  • How corporations can collaborate with other companies, NGOs and agencies to enhance water quality
  • How watershed conservation projects vary in urban and rural settings
  • Ways to measure success in water stewardship projects

Who should take this webinar:

  • Corporations looking to make connections around water quality projects
  • Non-profit organizations, agencies or grassroots groups that want to expand the scope of their existing watershed conservation work
  • Anyone interested in learning more about the role of the private sector in water conservation

.

Presentadores:

  • Mario Valdez Beltrán, Bayer
  • Karla González, Gerente de Sostenibilidad,
  • Vulcan Materials Company Rodrigo Pimentel dos Santos, Gerente de Sitio de Sostenibilidad, Seguridad, Salud, Medio Ambiente y Calidad, Bayer
  • Gustavo Ramírez, Director Forestal, The Earth Lab
