  • The importance of monitoring conservation projects
  • What monitoring is needed for a strong Conservation Certification application
  • Tactics for designing a comprehensive, but easy-to-use, monitoring protocol
  • Instructions on recording monitoring observations using the new WHC templates
  • How to use the monitoring data to evaluate and improve a project over time

Who should take this webinar:

  • Anyone new to conservation projects
  • Site teams or partners looking to refresh or improve their monitoring skills

Presenters:

  • Caitlin Banigan, Manager, Conservation Certification, WHC

Fostering Corporate-Community Relations through Meaningful Engagement

October 14, 2021/by Ivan Gospodinov

Sponsored by Stellantis

Meaningful community engagement that goes beyond transactional interactions or conventional corporate philanthropy can greatly enhance a company’s ability to establish, maintain or restore social license to operate (SLO). Obtaining SLO involves building trust with community members and leaders through environmental and socially responsible actions that are informed by local needs, and then communicated to community members. Once established, SLO needs to be maintained through ongoing community outreach, and engagement strategies should be kept current with an attention to new data, policy changes, and shifts in community opinions and needs. As the current biodiversity and climate crises become more dire, and more opportunities for the private sector to address these issues arise, expectations for companies to act quickly, transparently and in conjunction with scientific consensus will continue to grow.

Underground Wonders: The Importance of Caves and Karst in Bat Conservation

September 22, 2021/by Ivan Gospodinov

View the webinar

…

The year 2021 has been declared the International Year of Caves and Karst, designed to promote and celebrate the importance of caves and the karst topography that creates so many of the world’s fascinating cave systems. Although often located within the earth, hidden from sight, these distinctive land features benefit not only the world’s bat population, but also other wildlife and humans.

In this webinar, bat experts and advocates will take the audience deep into some of these other-worldly landscapes and discuss why caves and karst formations must be protected. The panel will highlight the most pressing threats that bats face and explain how anyone can help make a bat-friendly community, above and below the ground, during this year’s Bat Week (October 24-31) and beyond.

What you’ll learn:

  • Why wildlife, including bats, depend on subterranean habitats for survival, and how cave ecosystems benefit humans (such as providing water)
  • How to protect bat caves and how to enhance bat habitat above the ground, whether in a backyard, corporate landscape or community park

Who should take this webinar:

  • Corporate teams who wish to protect on-site cave or karst features, or other forms of bat habitat
  • Anyone interested in learning about bats or planning a Bat Week event
  • Agencies, NGOs and other partners interested in managing lands for bats or implementing bat education

Presenters:

  • Limaris (Lima) Soto, Caves and Karst Program Lead/USFS GeoCorps America Program Coordinator, US Forest Service, Minerals and Geology Management, Washington Office
  • Mylea Bayless, Chief of Strategic Partnerships, Bat Conservation International; member of Bat Week committee
  • Bat Week panel — representatives will be available to answer questions on bat biology, certification of bat projects, bat-related resources and education opportunities for Bat Week

Moths as a Performance Indicator: An Intro to Terrestrial Rapid BioAssessment

August 18, 2021/by Ivan Gospodinov

View the webinar

Moths are largely nocturnal creatures, but they can shed light on local biodiversity in a unique way. Many of the world’s 160,000+ moth species have niche habitat needs. Knowing what species are present in an area (and which ones are conspicuously absent) can therefore tell us a lot about that habitat’s health.

In this webinar, Blaine Rothauser, a senior ecologist from GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc. will share first-hand insights on how teams can translate moth inventories into meaningful baseline data about habitat value, while also helping us gain a new appreciation for moths’ beauty and diversity.

What you’ll learn:

  • Why baseline data is important to conservation work
  • How moths can provide important clues about environmental integrity
  • Strategies for using species inventories to inform project design and adaptive management

Who should attend:

  • Site teams looking for a new approach to data collection and habitat assessment
  • Anyone who wants to gain a greater appreciation for an overlooked group of insects

Presenter:

  • Blaine Rothauser, Senior Natural Resource Specialist/Senior Ecologist/Rare Species Biologist, GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc.

Supporting the Global Pollinator Population Through Local Action

June 22, 2021/by Ivan Gospodinov

Sponsored by BASF

Given the interconnectivity of habitats and regions, and the key role pollinators play in global food production and trade, the collapse in pollinator populations poses threats to global biodiversity, food security and economic prosperity. It’s therefore critical that companies worldwide take action, contributing to the network of regional pollinator (and pollinator education) initiatives that together are addressing this global crisis.

The dedication to preserving local pollinators demonstrated through the featured case studies of this white paper can inspire acts of pollinator conservation on corporate lands of any size, in all industries and localities, meaning that any land manager can contribute to the global movement to protect these invaluable species.

Private Sector Potential for Community-first Climate Action

May 10, 2021/by Ivan Gospodinov

Sponsored by Cleveland-Cliffs

This white paper explores the importance of Natural Climate Solutions (NCS) like sequestering carbon in soil and vegetation, installing green infrastructure for greater resiliency and biodiversity, and conducting NCS-oriented outreach. WHC-certified programs worldwide are already making big contributions to the fight against climate change, even if the programs’ stated goals speak to other environmental needs. Several of these programs are showcased in this paper, but countless others have created similar impact through their conservation, education and outreach work.
