From Attraction to Action: Protecting Birds Where We Live and Work

August 18, 2025/by Patricia Leidemer

View the webinar

Bird populations are in steep decline, with window collisions ranking among the top three causes, alongside habitat loss and outdoor cats. At the same time, efforts to improve biodiversity through native plantings and habitat creation are attracting more birds to our corporate campuses, homes, and communities. So how do we welcome them without inadvertently putting them at risk?

In this webinar, you’ll hear from leading experts in native plant and window strike prevention, including ecologist Krista De Cooke from Homegrown National Park and Dr. Tina Phillips and Cady Netland, from Cornell Lab of Ornithology, who will share actionable strategies, outreach tools, and real-world examples to help make your site safer for birds while providing the critical habitats they need. Background and guidance on implementing strategies, such as window treatments, light pollution reduction, and native plant landscaping, can work together to support native birds, pollinators, and even human well-being.

You’ll also be introduced to the Bird Collision Prevention Alliance (StopBirdCollisions.org), a new collaborative working group coordinated by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology to combine the efforts and expertise of over 100 diverse organizations raising awareness, offering solutions, ad inspiring a growing movement to protect native bird populations in the human-built environment.

The session will conclude with a brief Q&A, giving you the chance to ask questions and connect with the presenters.

What you’ll learn:

  • Gardening for birds: using native plants to create lasting, safe habitats
  • How to identify high-risk collision areas on corporate campuses, especially glass-heavy buildings.
  • How to utilize citizen science tools like eBird and NestWatch for monitoring and engagement.
  • How to involve employees at the workplace, at home, and throughout their communities.

Who should attend this webinar:

  • Site and facilities managers looking to create safer environments for birds and wildlife
  • Corporate sustainability and ESG professionals focused on biodiversity goals
  • Employees and individuals seeking ways to make a difference at work, home, or in communities.
  • Community engagement teams creating outreach or education materials
  • Anyone interested in learning effective strategies to reduce bird collisions

Speakers:

  • Krista De Cooke, Strategic Partnership and Science Lead, Homegrown National Park
  • Cady Netland, Coordinator for Bird Safety, Cornell Lab of Ornithology
  • Dr. Tina Phillips, Assistant Director of the Center for Engagement in Science and Nature, Cornell Lab of Ornithology

Birds: Nature’s Key Performance Indicators

September 4, 2019/by Ivan Gospodinov

A call to action for corporate landowners to restore, enhance and manage habitat for birds
Sponsored by Ontario Power Generation

Birds are everywhere. From the grey pigeon seen on city streets to the brightly feathered tropical species found in rain forests, birds have colonized every continent and evolved to inhabit niches both specialized and general. Because they are everywhere, birds can easily be the focus of a corporate conservation effort. Most species respond well to conservation management, making them an ideal indicator to overall ecosystem health. With accessible technology and an increased need, now is the time for corporate landowners to engage in bird conservation projects.

Enhancing Habitat Connectivity Through Corporate Conservation

July 17, 2018/by Ivan Gospodinov

The Private Sector Role in Reconnecting Habitat for Ecosystem Health and Resiliency
Sponsored by Bruce Power

Healthy habitats are necessary for plants and animals to survive and thrive. One measure of the health of a habitat is the degree to which it is isolated from other habitats by land management practices or development, commonly referred to as fragmentation. Fragmentation is one of the biggest threats to biodiversity across the planet, as it can prevent species from moving to hunt, mate, disperse to new areas or escape predators. When corporate landowners engage in ecological connectivity initiatives to reduce fragmentation, they are contributing to landscape-scale efforts that have benefits beyond the corporate footprint and across the entire ecoregion.

When Birds and Corporate Habitats Collide

May 24, 2016/by Ivan Gospodinov

View the webinar

While many of our conservation projects are built to attract birds, not all corporate habitats are suitable for birds.

Each year, millions of birds die from collisions with windows. A year-round occurrence, bird strikes can happen at virtually any type of building – commercial, educational or residential. The problem is especially evident during migration season. In addition, excessive bird droppings and nesting materials at roost sites may cause health risks to humans and create other problems on public buildings and grounds.

In this webinar, you’ll learn:

  • What causes bird strikes and ways to reduce or eliminate these strikes on buildings at your site
  • Various techniques to effectively and humanely manage, control and deter birds at your habitat

Presenter:

  • Lindsay Jacks, Coordinator, Lights Out Baltimore

International Migratory Bird Day: Celebrating Birds in Your Habitat

September 23, 2015/by Ivan Gospodinov

View the webinar

International Migratory Bird Day (IMBD) celebrates one of the most important and spectacular events in the Americas: bird migration. Since 1993, IMBD has fostered bird conservation and education, and has introduced countless youths and adults to migratory birds. Birds don’t migrate on a single day. So while IMBD’s official date is the second Saturday in May for the U.S. and Canada, activities often take place year-round, and events are best offered any time migratory birds are present. Join us as we explore the 2015 theme of “restoring habitat for migratory bird species.” Our presenter will share curriculum ideas, workshops that you can attend, websites to use for resources and citizen science programs to join.
