Fostering Corporate-Community Relations through Meaningful Engagement

October 14, 2021/by Ivan Gospodinov

Sponsored by Stellantis

Meaningful community engagement that goes beyond transactional interactions or conventional corporate philanthropy can greatly enhance a company’s ability to establish, maintain or restore social license to operate (SLO). Obtaining SLO involves building trust with community members and leaders through environmental and socially responsible actions that are informed by local needs, and then communicated to community members. Once established, SLO needs to be maintained through ongoing community outreach, and engagement strategies should be kept current with an attention to new data, policy changes, and shifts in community opinions and needs. As the current biodiversity and climate crises become more dire, and more opportunities for the private sector to address these issues arise, expectations for companies to act quickly, transparently and in conjunction with scientific consensus will continue to grow.

Nature-Based Employee Engagement

January 21, 2020/by Ivan Gospodinov

Perspectives on corporate programs that offer meaningful opportunities for employees to participate in conservation
Sponsored by Waste Management

With historically low unemployment rates, competition for talent acquisition and retention are driving companies to invest in engagement efforts for a competitive advantage. Employee engagement programs that are focused on conservation and biodiversity offer meaningful and accessible opportunities for employees to get active, learn something new and make a positive contribution to the environment.

The Conservation Connection

June 10, 2019/by Ivan Gospodinov

How on-the-ground actions for biodiversity and education can contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals
Sponsored by Chemours

All businesses can contribute to the prosperity of the communities in which they are located, as well as contribute to protecting, restoring or enhancing nature through ecological stewardship practices on their lands. The SDGs provide the ideal framework from which to connect corporate lands to community improvement, and to report interconnected corporate citizenship actions into CSR initiatives.

…
What makes a great bug hotel? WHC wanted to find out through last year’s Insect Hotel Challenge, our first ever international design and build contest for bug hotels. We received 41 entries from across the US, Mexico, Brazil, and as far away as Uzbekistan. The entries were judged on creativity and ingenuity, the use of found materials and the awareness of the designers of the habitat benefit to insects.

In this webinar, hear from the teams behind the winning hotels on how they developed their creative structures and implementation plans.

You’ll learn:

  • The inspiration behind the creation of these award-winning bug hotels for native bees, lacewings, beetles, ladybugs, and other insects.
  • How these projects enhance partnerships and strengthen conservation programs and community engagement
  • Ideas for building a bug hotel of your own

Presenters:

  • Tatiana Gil, General Motors São Caetano do Sul, Brazil
  • Becky Azevedo, Technical Manager, Waste Management Guadalupe Landfill
  • Thelma Redick, Senior Director of Conservation Content and Partnerships, Wildlife Habitat Council

Saving Bats From Decline

October 19, 2018/by Ivan Gospodinov

The Corporate Role in Preserving the Ecological and Economic Benefits of Bats
Sponsored by Ontario Power Generation

Bats are a unique group of animals with ecological, economical and cultural significance around the world. They are ubiquitous, with 1,300 species living on every continent but Antarctica. Insectivorous bats save agriculture billions of dollars through predation of a multitude of agricultural pests. Other bats eat fruit and nectar, acting as pollinators and spreading seeds of the fruit they eat, proving essential to the success of many food products like tequila and chocolate, consequently contributing to the global economy. With increased need, heightened interest and accessible technology, now is an opportune time for corporate landowners to engage in bat conservation projects.

Enhancing Habitat Connectivity Through Corporate Conservation

July 17, 2018/by Ivan Gospodinov

The Private Sector Role in Reconnecting Habitat for Ecosystem Health and Resiliency
Sponsored by Bruce Power

Healthy habitats are necessary for plants and animals to survive and thrive. One measure of the health of a habitat is the degree to which it is isolated from other habitats by land management practices or development, commonly referred to as fragmentation. Fragmentation is one of the biggest threats to biodiversity across the planet, as it can prevent species from moving to hunt, mate, disperse to new areas or escape predators. When corporate landowners engage in ecological connectivity initiatives to reduce fragmentation, they are contributing to landscape-scale efforts that have benefits beyond the corporate footprint and across the entire ecoregion.

Corporate Citizenship and STEM Education

April 19, 2018/by Ivan Gospodinov

Creating a Pipeline of Proficiency for a Future Workforce
Sponsored by Freeport-McMoRan

Many companies today choose to use the environment as the integrating concept for STEM, providing learning opportunities through hands-on, outdoors and nature-based activities. These approaches—examples of which are outlined in this white paper—take advantage of the lands on which an operation is located,  understand community needs by providing place-based and relevant programs, and meet multiple corporate goals across the spectrum of corporate citizenship efforts.

Environmental Justice: A Healthy and Sustainable Future for All

July 21, 2016/by Ivan Gospodinov

View the webinar

The EPA defines environmental justice as the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income, with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies. The environmental justice movement serves to bridge the gap of environmental disparities in low income communities.

Facilities that operate in these communities face a variety of challenges in developing community-based conservation programs, including lack of resources or interest. This webinar will address those challenges and more, offering strategies on how to engage and empower community members to define what the greening of their community looks like, and to encourage young people to investigate careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math).

You’ll learn:

  • The origins, present and future of the environmental justice movement
  • How to develop and expand conservation projects in low income areas
  • Success stories of environmental justice projects by WHC corporate members

Presenter:

  • Tasha J. LoPorto, NEPA Program Specialist, United States Department of Agriculture/Forest Service, Ecosystem Management Coordinator
