Small Scales, Big Impacts

August 25, 2020/by Ivan Gospodinov

How conservation makes positive impacts for biodiversity and community awareness despite limitations related to the amount of land, number of employees or the size of managed species.
Sponsored by Toyota

Thinking “smaller” provides private corporate landowners an accessible starting point for action. These actions could develop into gateways for conservation on larger landscapes, and for repetition of small acts of conservation across multiple locations. Designing small for biodiversity is a low risk exercise that can have a high rate of return when a successful small project can be highlighted as an unique but welcome addition to a corporate workplace.

Easy Steps to Start Using Drones to Manage Invasive Species

January 16, 2020/by Ivan Gospodinov

View the webinar
…

Monitoring for invasive species is an important aspect of habitat management, but can be challenging on large or inaccessible areas. Drone imagery can save many man-hours of survey time, typically done on foot, and often in remote areas. Their ability to fly slow and low provides high quality imagery and information in a very site-specific manner. Join us on this webinar to learn how the latest in drone technology can facilitate remote monitoring for invasive species.

You’ll learn:

  • How to use new drone software and cameras for remote monitoring of invasive species
  • What data you can expect to gather when using drones for monitoring
  • How to use the data to make informed decisions about invasive species management

Presenter:

  • Gene Huntington, Lead Consultant, Steward Green

Saving Bats From Decline

October 19, 2018/by Ivan Gospodinov

The Corporate Role in Preserving the Ecological and Economic Benefits of Bats
Sponsored by Ontario Power Generation

Bats are a unique group of animals with ecological, economical and cultural significance around the world. They are ubiquitous, with 1,300 species living on every continent but Antarctica. Insectivorous bats save agriculture billions of dollars through predation of a multitude of agricultural pests. Other bats eat fruit and nectar, acting as pollinators and spreading seeds of the fruit they eat, proving essential to the success of many food products like tequila and chocolate, consequently contributing to the global economy. With increased need, heightened interest and accessible technology, now is an opportune time for corporate landowners to engage in bat conservation projects.

Enhancing Habitat Connectivity Through Corporate Conservation

July 17, 2018/by Ivan Gospodinov

The Private Sector Role in Reconnecting Habitat for Ecosystem Health and Resiliency
Sponsored by Bruce Power

Healthy habitats are necessary for plants and animals to survive and thrive. One measure of the health of a habitat is the degree to which it is isolated from other habitats by land management practices or development, commonly referred to as fragmentation. Fragmentation is one of the biggest threats to biodiversity across the planet, as it can prevent species from moving to hunt, mate, disperse to new areas or escape predators. When corporate landowners engage in ecological connectivity initiatives to reduce fragmentation, they are contributing to landscape-scale efforts that have benefits beyond the corporate footprint and across the entire ecoregion.

Deserts Project Guidance

September 25, 2015/by Ivan Gospodinov

Introduction

Deserts are commonly defined as dry regions receiving less than 10 inches of rain per year on average. Deserts generally have sparse plant cover, except in depressions where water accumulates. In many cases, the sandy, stony or rocky substrate contributes more to the appearance of the landscape than does the vegetation.

Building a Program on Your Remediation Site

September 23, 2015/by Ivan Gospodinov

View the webinar

This course is tailored to those considering a habitat enhancement or education based program on their remediation sites. WHC is seeing an increased desire from companies to involve their closed or legacy site locations into WHC programs. These sites present many opportunities, but with challenges such as a lack of employee presence or negative community perceptions, how can a team successfully advance their habitat or education goals?

Join us for this one hour session to hear guest speakers from Bridgestone Americas, Inc., The Boeing Company, and BASF Corporation as they share their insights into creating successful wildlife habitat and education programs on their corporate remediation sites. This course will focus on the value and benefits of creating a habitat or education program on a remediation site, ways to engage the community in outreach and education initiatives, examples of successful projects, and strategies for overcoming common obstacles that are specific to the remediation context.

Learning goals:

  1. Learn the value and benefits of implementing habitat initiatives on remediated sites
  2. Learn ways to overcome common obstacles and challenges when implementing habitat initiatives on remediated sites
  3. Learn strategies for community engagement through outreach and education initiatives related to your remediation program
  4. Learn examples of successful programs implemented on remediation sites

Caves and Subterranean Habitats Project Guidance

September 20, 2015/by Ivan Gospodinov

Introduction

Natural caves are underground spaces formed by the weathering of rock. They are unique systems that have immense scientific, recreational and wildlife value. Natural caves can include karst systems, which are subterranean landscapes formed from the dissolution of soluble rocks such as limestone, dolomite and gypsum.

Grasslands Project Guidance

September 13, 2015/by Ivan Gospodinov

Introduction

Broadly defined, grasslands are an ecosystem dominated by herbaceous vegetation – typically grasses and wildflowers – with woody species covering no more than 10-20% of the ground area. Grasslands include both communities that require maintenance to retain their open nature, such as meadows, old fields and shrublands, and communities in which climate and other conditions prevent tree establishment, such as short-grass prairie.

Landscaping Project Guidance

September 9, 2015/by Ivan Gospodinov

Introduction

Landscaping is generally considered part of the built environment, rather than a “natural” habitat. However, when designed with biodiversity in mind, it can make valuable contributions to conservation efforts. Landscaping designed to include a diversity of native plant species can benefit a variety of wildlife including butterflies, native bees and songbirds. Landscaping can also reduce irrigation and fertilizer needs, and benefit water and air quality.
