Environmental Justice: A Healthy and Sustainable Future for All

July 21, 2016/by Ivan Gospodinov

View the webinar

The EPA defines environmental justice as the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income, with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies. The environmental justice movement serves to bridge the gap of environmental disparities in low income communities.

Facilities that operate in these communities face a variety of challenges in developing community-based conservation programs, including lack of resources or interest. This webinar will address those challenges and more, offering strategies on how to engage and empower community members to define what the greening of their community looks like, and to encourage young people to investigate careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math).

You’ll learn:

  • The origins, present and future of the environmental justice movement
  • How to develop and expand conservation projects in low income areas
  • Success stories of environmental justice projects by WHC corporate members

Presenter:

  • Tasha J. LoPorto, NEPA Program Specialist, United States Department of Agriculture/Forest Service, Ecosystem Management Coordinator

When Birds and Corporate Habitats Collide

May 24, 2016/by Ivan Gospodinov

View the webinar

While many of our conservation projects are built to attract birds, not all corporate habitats are suitable for birds.

Each year, millions of birds die from collisions with windows. A year-round occurrence, bird strikes can happen at virtually any type of building – commercial, educational or residential. The problem is especially evident during migration season. In addition, excessive bird droppings and nesting materials at roost sites may cause health risks to humans and create other problems on public buildings and grounds.

In this webinar, you’ll learn:

  • What causes bird strikes and ways to reduce or eliminate these strikes on buildings at your site
  • Various techniques to effectively and humanely manage, control and deter birds at your habitat

Presenter:

  • Lindsay Jacks, Coordinator, Lights Out Baltimore

We Need a Buffer: Protecting Wetlands by Installing and Monitoring Riparian Buffer Zones

April 29, 2016/by Ivan Gospodinov

View the Webinar

Did you know that more than half of the world’s wetlands have been lost since 1900? Wetlands provide vital habitat to a significant number of species, including waterfowl, wading birds, frogs and salamanders, aquatic invertebrates, turtles and fish. Wetlands also provide a essential ecosystem services like purifying our water, absorbing flood waters, and protecting coastal and riparian areas against erosion.

This webinar will discuss how riparian buffer zones are one of the most important practices you can implement to help protect your wetlands.

You’ll learn:

  • The many benefits of a healthy riparian buffer
  • How these buffers can provide forage and shelter for native species such as birds, pollinator, and other wildlife
  • “Edge of field practices” to incorporate into agricultural and former agricultural areas and why they are so critical to healthy aquatic systems

Incorporating Project Learning Tree into Your Educational Projects

February 2, 2016/by Ivan Gospodinov

View the webinar

Are you interested in incorporating Project Learning Tree into your educational projects? In this webinar, learn how to use this curriculum as a way to share the wonder of your habitat with others, and find out how you and your partners can receive training in this curriculum. Project Learning Tree is a set of nearly 100 conservation education lessons developed by teachers and published by the American Forest Foundation. But don’t be fooled by the title—the lessons in Project Learning Tree cover so much more than the study of trees! Hands-on lessons delve into cross-cutting science concepts such as diversity, patterns of change and inter-relationships in ecosystems. Aimed at kindergarten through secondary school, the lessons are adaptable for use with formal education, scout groups, annual fairs or casual learning experiences along a nature trail with employees and families.
